What this playtest records, and why
This is a test build of a small strategy game. While you play, the page sends a short record of what happened in the game to our server, so that we can see where the game is confusing, slow or broken. We use it only to improve the game.
What a record holds:
- a random ID made for this browser, kept in it between your visits so that we can see whether players come back (it stays until you clear this site's data in your browser), and a random ID of this page load;
- if you sign in with Google (optional, and only on this page): instead of that random ID, a code our server makes from your Google account's ID with a key that only our server holds. The same Google account gives the same code on every device, so that we can see a player come back on another computer. Our server keeps the code, not your account's ID, and this browser keeps the code until you sign out;
- if you sign in and choose a name (optional): the name, kept with your code so that no other player can play under it, until you choose another. The front page shows "Yours" under a name kept for you;
- if you sign in: what you have earned in the game (your purse, your renown and how many games you have started), kept with your code so that it follows you to another device. When this browser and the account disagree, the larger of each is kept;
- the version of the game you are playing;
- the code of the duel you joined, or the map's name for a game against the computer;
-
what happened, with the time in milliseconds since the page opened. These events are:
- the page loaded, with the kind of site that served it (our own address, itch.io or another game site), the name of the site whose link brought you here (only its name, such as reddit.com, never the page you were on), and a word a link of ours may carry to tell us where we posted it;
- you sat at a duel's table, or left it before it started;
- a game started, with how many people and how many computer players are in it;
- your first move;
- a game ended (won or lost, how long, how much land);
- you closed the page during a game (at what moment, and your share of the land);
- you closed or left the page: where you were (the front page, a duel's table, a game or its end), how many games you started and finished since it opened, and how long it was on your screen;
- the connection dropped or came back, or the game's two copies disagreed;
- an error in the page, with its message;
- the "Sign in with Google" button was shown, and how a sign-in ended (signed in, refused or cancelled).
- if this browser belongs to the studio (we mark our own browsers once), a mark that says so, so that our own visits are counted apart from yours.
What you write, only if you choose to:
- after some games a short question asks how the game was: your answer (good, OK or bad) and the line you write, if any;
- the Bug button sends what you write, with the screen you were on and the moment of the game.
Please do not write your name, your email or anything else about yourself in them.
What it never holds:
- your name, if you play without signing in: it stays in your browser. To make sure no other player already holds it, the front page sends it to our server, which answers and keeps nothing. It is shown to the other players at a game's table, and the server keeps it only in memory for that game;
- your email, your name, your picture or anything else from your Google account: signing in asks Google for your account's ID only, and our server keeps only the code made from it;
- your IP address: our server does not store it. Cloudflare, which runs the server, sees it to deliver the page, as with any website;
- cookies, advertising IDs or a fingerprint of your device.
Where it goes and who sees it
The records are stored in a database (Cloudflare D1) in the studio's Cloudflare account, in Eastern North America (Cloudflare's ENAM location). Only the studio reads them: Oleksii Zaitsev, and the AI tools the owner uses to analyse the playtest, through queries kept in the game's code. Nothing is sold or shared, and nothing is used for advertising.
Signing in takes you to Google's own sign-in page and back; no script of Google's runs on this page. Google's privacy policy applies on its page, and Google learns that you signed in to this playtest.
How long it is kept
Until the playtest ends. The owner decides when; it may run for six months or more. The end will be announced on this page, and the records are deleted within 30 days after it.
Your choices
- To play without sending anything, add
?events=offto the page's address. - The question after a game and the Bug button are optional: skip them, and nothing you could write is sent.
- Signing in is optional: without it you play as a guest, and what you earn stays in this browser. "Sign out" on the front page removes the code and the session from this browser; the name you chose stays yours until you choose another, what you earned stays with your account and in this browser, and both are deleted with your records when you ask.
- Records are not linked to your name, so we cannot find "your" records to delete them. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes its ID; the next visit gets a new one.
- If you signed in, your records carry your code, which the front page shows when you point at "Signed in with Google". Send it to us and we delete the records under it, the name kept under it and what you earned.
